For this assignment, I visited a few school webpages and one of them was the school webpage Mainland High, the high school that I attended prior to coming to Florida State University. This page did not have a designated link to resources for teachers, only parents and students as well as a brief listing of the faculty and staff. Florida State’s school webpage however offers a page dedicated to providing faculty with the tools and resources as supplements to their teaching. Here, faculty members are able to find resources and information regarding where they are in their career as a faculty member and how to advance forward to receive tenure in the long run. You can see the homepage with the links without having to login and some of the links offer public information as well.
As a prospective teacher, I am studying how current faculty use technology and the World Wide Web in their classrooms to their advantage. School webpages like that of Florida State University’s is a great example of a tool that I would use to figure out the best ways to achieve my goal and responsibilities of educating students effectively because it has information for every stage in a faculty member’s career. This information can be very useful as a guide or how-to when it comes to knowing what you should be doing at various points of your career, how to prepare your students during these times for assessments that prove your methods of teaching to be effective and how to better your teaching skills as you advance on into your career.
If the school I work for does not have a specific place on the school website that is accessible to faculty members, I would do my best to help create a space for this information as I feel that it is crucial to the professional development and success of teachers and other staff to be made aware of where they can find information and resources to help them along the way as they advance through out the career. This would include links to relevant and up-to-date articles, survey results and statistics regarding teaching efficiency at our school, in our county and state.
A good place to set up a webpage of information would be a link to a PB Works wiki platform page. My peers and I recently worked on this platform for a project and though I felt that the layout was a bit dated, it was very relevant as far as being able to provide information in a comprehensive and accessible way. We were able to link other, related information to an initial homepage and provide visitors with a guide to how to use our evaluation forms to assess how reliable online resources like articles were to support a claim or argument. This made it easy to quickly inform others on good ways to make sure the places that they’re getting information from are valid and reliable. And it was free!
If my school in the future is looking for a free, quick and easy way to publish and share information about our school, staff, curriculum and career paths, I would definitely recommend the use of PB Works to get the job done. Aside from the dated display, it would do us justice in providing us with a space for us to get resources and information to our faculty and staff and could also be used to teach students how to use these platforms to inform others with valid, reliable resources and information on any topic there is out there as well.
